flak

The colloquial word for adverse criticism comes from the term for antiaircraft fire. This itself arose in the Second World War from the German abbreviation of Flugzeugabwehrkanone, literally 'aircraft defense gun.' English flak jacket is of the same origin and has retained much of the physical 'firing' sense.
